Expanded Folder Age and Attachment reporting for Exchange / Office 365 Mailboxes with EWS and Powershell

Folder Item numbers, size's and Attachment Item Numbers, types and sizes are one of the Mailbox statistics that is useful when your trying to look at how and why a mailbox is growing or why your mailbox performance might be declining if you have a large number of folder items. With the recent increases in Mailbox size quotas  in Office365 it can be easy to become quite indifferent to how quickly your mailbox might be growing. For example if you have 100GB quota the lazy mindset (which I admit to being a part of) can be to just keep everything you get via mail (or stack it and rack it). If your users are not able to take advantage of cloudy attachments (or the users refuse to change their use habits) the nature of expanding file sizes means a sharper growth curve for Folder Items and Attachments. The traditional way of tracking Mailbox sizes is to use Get-MailboxStatistics and Get-MailboxFolderStatistics for which there are many good scripts around that give a good overview of wha...

Exchange EWS eDiscovery Powershell Module

eDiscovery is one of the more useful features introduced in Exchange 2013, and offers a quick and powerful way of Searching and reporting on Items in a Mailbox or across multiple mailboxes on an Exchange Server or in Exchange Online. In this post I wanted to rollup a few eDiscovery scripts I posted in the past to a more user friendly and expandable PowerShell module. eDiscovery uses KQL (Keyword Query Language) to search indexed properties which are listed on https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn774955(v=exchg.150).aspx  . For doing quick reporting with eDiscovery you can tell Exchange to only return the number (and size) of the items that match your KQL query. Otherwise Exchange will return preview items (200 at time) which means the query can take some time to complete if your enumerating though a large result set. I've tried to take a very modular approach with the code in this module to make it easier to extend Permissions - The eDiscovery parts of...

Working with Referance Attachments in EWS on Exchange Online

Last year a new feature was introduced into Exchange Online to allow you to create an Attachment where the Attachment resided on OneDrive rather then the traditional Email attachment approach you can read more about this here  http://blogs.office.com/2014/10/08/introducing-new-way-share-files-outlook-web-app/  there was also an Ignite session you can watch on how this has evolved https://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Ignite/2015/BRK2196 . MAPI has always had a rich set of attachment types since Exchange's inception to deal with Rich Text Messaging eg the various attachment types you can encounter are listed in https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/cc815439.aspx   . In EWS these attachment types where simplified some what into either Item Attachments (for Attached Store Items) or File Attachments. To cater for this new feature a new Attachment Type called a ReferenceAttachment has been introduced into EWS in Exchange Online. To see the ReferenceAttachmentT...

Exchange Attachment statistics reporting with EWS and Powershell

The following script is a combination of a couple of other scripts I've posted in the past, what it does is compiles statistics of the messages with and without attachments in a Mailbox and then produces a report. To do this in EWS you need to look at every Item in the mailbox,  if the item has attachments it determines how large these attachments are and keeps a running tab of the largest attachment in the mailbox. In Exchange there are a number of different attachment types but EWS divides them into two distinct types, File Attachments and ItemAttachment which are basically attached Exchange Items. This script compile statistics around these two distinct types but doesn't process down to the embeeded attachment level. The results of all the requests are added together to produce a final report that reflects the attachment statistics for the entire mailbox. A picture is worth a thousand words so it produces a report like  To get the information about the Items in th...
